Synopsis:

ALUME is a quiet exploration of the fundamental human need to find a place to call home, and the silent sacrifices we make to be accepted. The story follows a soft, glowing entity named Alume, who arrives in a massive, rigid city made of stone.

Because the film has absolutely no dialogue, the narrative relies entirely on visual and audible storytelling. We use shifting colors, light, and environment design to express exactly what Alume is feeling. As we watch Alume try to navigate this heavy, unyielding world, a question begins to emerge: How far are we willing to go in search of belonging and why?

Protagonist: Alume

Alume is the emotional center of the film. By design, they are entirely organic, fluid, and vulnerable inspired by the form and nature of Jellyfishes. They have no hard edges, just a warm glow within that reacts to their surroundings.

Since we don't understand the language spoken by Alume and the others, their light and physicality become our language. When they feel safe, the light is warm and inviting; when the pressure of the stone/concrete city builds, their color shifts and their physical shape is tested. The name "Alume" a word made up from Sanskrit and Latin, roughly translates to a sanctuary of light. The film explores what can happen to that sanctuary when it is exposed to an environment that refuses to bend.

Visual Tone & Style

Since there is no dialogue in ALUME, the most important parts of the storytelling are the visuals and the emotions told through color, light, texture, etc.

We are telling this story, for the most part, in bright, dusty sunlight. The world is harsh in some aspects, yet painted in warm, pastel colors. To achieve this, we opted for 3D animation driven by a painted, watercolor aesthetic using Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) in Blender. Our goal isn't hyper-realism; it is about capturing a specific, overwhelming mood. Every shadow, texture, and color shift is intentional and is supposed to have a strong emotional impact. The visuals act as one of the major voices of the film, designed to feel like a high-end illustration come to life.

No matter who we are or where we come from, our deepest, most fundamental need is to belong. But the pressure to find our place can be overwhelming, often pushing us to extremes just to feel accepted by the world around us.

ALUME is born from a very personal exploration of uprootedness and identity loss. It’s about that quiet, internal violence we inflict upon ourselves when we try to squeeze ourselves into the rigid boxes society builds for us.

We don't just want to make a visually intriguing short film; We want to create a visceral, emotional experience. We are trying to create a film that relies entirely on visual storytelling, sound, shape psychology, and raw atmosphere. If you've ever found yourself lost in the world or even for once questioned where do you belong, then this one is for you.

2. The Crew: Ideally we are looking for four specific people who connect with these themes to help us build this world:

Music Composer / Sound Director: Since there is no dialogue, we need someone who can carry the entire emotional weight of the story through music alone.

Co-Animator (3D / Blender): To help with building with multitudes of assets alongside organic animations and developing the NPR shaders.

Graphic Designer: To help design title cards, typography, poster art, etc.

Colorist / Compositing Artist: Someone who knows how to tie 3D renders together with textures and film grain to finalize the painted look in post-production.
